NeighborLink OWLS is a member-to-member support initiative at OWLS Club that connects members who need help with everyday tasks to other members who are willing to lend a hand. We partner with a platform called NeighborLink—a nonprofit that specializes in connecting volunteers with simple service opportunities—to make these matches easy and safe.

(574) 397-0282How it Works
Volunteers can perform simple cost-saving repairs like fixing a leaky faucet, replacing the working parts of a toilet, and cleaning gutters. Members can reach out for help with tasks that can keep them safer in their homes, like moving items to lower shelves, changing ceiling lightbulbs, and adding nightlights or grab bars. The possibilities of ways we can help each other are nearly endless.
Program Details
Why did OWLS Club choose to become associated with NeighborLink?
We are working with NeighborLink for this volunteer support initiative because their platform offers a simple, effective way to coordinate volunteer help within a community. While their organization serves a broader network of neighborhoods and often facilitates public-facing projects, we are using their tools exclusively to support our own members.
How does this align with OWLS Club’s mission?
The heart of NeighborLink’s work—neighbors helping neighbors—aligns closely with OWLS Club’s values of connection and service. This initiative offers one more way for members to engage meaningfully—with their time, talents, and care—while also receiving support in times of need.
Do I need to be an OWLS Club member to participate?
Yes. Both the individuals requesting help and the volunteers offering assistance must be active members of OWLS Club. While NeighborLink’s platform is used in broader community settings elsewhere, this particular program is designed exclusively for use within our club. It’s one more way we’re strengthening relationships among members and supporting one another as we age.
Requesting Help
Who is eligible to request help?
Any current OWLS Club member can request assistance through the system. You don’t have to meet any income or physical ability criteria.
Tasks that have become too difficult or unsafe to do yourself and small maintenance and repair projects, are the perfect requests to make. You may submit requests as often as you wish. Once your request has been approved, it will be posted. Submitting a project does not mean it will be completed.
This is a volunteer-based program, so while we will do our best, we cannot guarantee that all requests will be filled.
What kinds of jobs are beyond our scope?
Volunteers can be helpful in a variety of ways. If your request is outside our abilities, we will explain why and may be able to suggest other resources.
Certain jobs are beyond our scope. These are generally more complex tasks that involve risks or specialized knowledge and licensing.
Limitations may include:
- Electrical wiring: Detailed electrical work requires an electrician’s license.
- Plumbing: Major plumbing work requires a licensed plumber.
- Structural changes require a contractor’s license.
- Heating, ventilation, or air conditioning repairs require a specialized HVAC license.
If you’re unsure whether your request is appropriate, phone (574) 397-0282, and we will be happy to assist you.
How do I submit a request?
Requests are submitted through a simple online form hosted on the NeighborLink platform. A liability waiver must be signed when submitting a request releasing OWLS and the volunteer of any liability.
A family member or trusted neighbor may complete the form for you, or you may call (574) 397-0282 and leave your name and phone number.
Is there a cost to participate?
All labor is free. Homeowners are responsible for a small $3.00 gas fee for our volunteers, as well as the cost of materials, parts, or if needed, additional contract work from other professionals outside the NeighborLink network.
Volunteering
How do I become a volunteer?
Once you complete the OWLS Club volunteer form, project leads will complete a standard background check. If you have trouble accessing the form, please call (574) 397-0282.
A NeighborLink OWLS admin will contact you to guide you through the process of viewing and accepting projects within your capabilities. In certain circumstances, you may be paired with another volunteer to complete specific requests.

VolunteerDo I need special skills?
No. Everyone can volunteer. Do you have the desire to help, to feel needed, or to learn new skills? NeighborLink OWLS needs volunteers to complete requests, and we also need volunteers who can spread the word, answer the phone, make project cost projections (shopping online or in-store), and do data entry. Stop by our main office or sign up to be a volunteer using the OWLS Club volunteer link below.

VolunteerCan I choose which requests I respond to?
Yes. Volunteers have full control over which tasks they accept. You can browse the listings and choose based on your skills, time, and location. You’re never obligated to take a request, and there’s no minimum number of times you need to participate.
What if I accept a request and something comes up where I can't perform the request?
We know life happens, and we understand that plans change. If you’ve claimed a request but can no longer fulfill it, we ask that you notify both the member and the OWLS Club staff as soon as possible so we can find another volunteer.
Communication and courtesy go a long way in making this program successful for everyone.
Privacy and Safety
Who sees my NeighborLink requests?
Only other OWLS Club members who are registered volunteers will see your request.
Is my personal information protected?
Yes. Your contact information is only visible within the NeighborLink network.
Are volunteers background checked?
OWLS is using a similar model to other groups that work with NeighborLink.
A small set of volunteer leaders are positioned as “dispatchers” and must complete a background check. They review and approve projects from the site, coordinate with homeowners, and oversee the project work.
They can ask other OWLS members (without background checks) to show up and help alongside them. If you have concerns, we suggest you have a family member, friend, or neighbor present during the initial visit.
Am I liable if someone gets hurt or property is damaged?
NeighborLink OWLS is like asking your neighbor to help you with a small project in your home. Both the volunteer and the homeowner sign a simple waiver acknowledging that participation is voluntary, and no one will be held liable for any risks involved.
